Mike Smith will run a flexible 4-3 defense

Mike Smith is prone to running a successful 4-3 defense, but in the last few years at Atlanta, he was running a 3-4. Tampa is known for running a 4-3 type of defense,  and the Tampa 2 was a 4-3 based defense. So it will be interesting to see what Mike Smith has up his sleeve.

Tampa went 8-24 with Lovie Smith’s style of the Tampa 2, and without going into too many details, Mike Smith said his defense will be “flexible … simple for our players, and complex for the quarterbacks, and opposing coaching staff.”

“In this day, and age, you have to give different looks. You can’t line up in the same look, and same front every time, so we’re going to have a lot of flexibility and we’re going to identify what the players are capable of doing,” Smith said.

“It’s gonna be very flexible,” Smith said. “I think in this day and age you have to get different looks. You can’t line up in the same look and the same front every time, so we’re going to have a lot of flexibility and we’re going to identify what the players are capable of doing and try to give different looks to the quarterback. Because if a quarterback has time in this league, he’s going to be a guy that’s going to be able to cut you up. So we’ve gotta do a very good job of putting together a package that is flexible, multiple, yet simple for our plays and complex for the quarterback and the opposing coaching staff.”  – Reported by Sander Philipse
