Optimus Grimes more than happy to join Tampa

Brent Grimes could have been a Buccaneer, but decided against it, and joined the Miami Dolphins instead. The new DC had every reason to do with Grimes joining the Buccaneers this time around. “It’s a big deal for me, because I like the system,” Grimes said. “And one thing I know about Mike Smith is, he’s a great coach as far as everybody on the field knowing where they need to be, and knowing what their assignment is, and he pays great attention to detail. And I feel like, in a league like the NFL, it’s the best of the best, the things that win the game are details. And he’s very detail-oriented. That was a big factor for me.”

Grimes was signed to a two-year, $16.5 million deal and had spent four of his five years in the NFL, playing under current Buccaneers DC Mike Smith. Brent Grimes also played against his new HC when Koetter was OC of the Atlanta Falcons, so he is familiar with both Smith and Koetter.

Grimes also stated that another reason he came to Tampa was the level of talent the team had. “I looked at the roster, and the main thing you see is, we have a great quarterback here, but we also have two great receivers, a great running back, and on the defense the linebackers are great. And we have a great defensive tackle. There’s a lot of talent everywhere.”
