The 50-year old ex-NFL player had collapsed due to extremely high blood pressure. A family member has stated that his condition had slightly improved showing small signs of progression, over the night.Drafted by the Saints in the second round of the 1988 NFL Draft, Perriman had played 10 seasons in the NFL. He played for several teams such as the Lions, the Chiefs, and the Dolphins. While playing for the Lions, he and co-wide receiver Herman Moore, became the first teammates in NFL history to record more than 100 receptions each and more than 1,400 yards receiving in the same  season.
