Mike Smith will remain the defensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Smith did seek to fill a couple of head coaching vacancies this offseason, and after having a couple of interviews with the Jaguars and the Chargers he wound up signing a contract extension with Tampa.

After a shaky start to the 2016 season, Tampa’s defense began improving under Mike Smith and continued to improve showing signs that next season Tampa’s defense could be a top ranking unit. During the latter half of last season, Tampa’s defense was ranked in the top half of the NFL and during their five-game winning streak only allowed 64 points.
