The Option. No Really, Bucs Offense and the Option

After OTA’s last week, a number of players and a few coaches had the chance to speak with the media and after hearing Cameron Brate as well as Coach Koetter sound off, it looks like we may see some new formations in this upcoming season.

Both Cam and Coach Koetter mentioned the NFL being a copycat league, and after watching the Eagles hoist the Lombardi trophy this past season, I can’t argue with their ideas. The Eagles as well as the Los Angeles Rams both had dramatically improved offenses from their previous season and one of the common denominator’s would be they both expanded their playbooks to incorporate more of the run-pass option.

LA led by Jared Goff and Philadelphia led by Carson Wentz as well as Nick Foles both had tremendously successful seasons last year after adding plays to help benefit their quarterbacks and get them more comfortable in the game. After hearing this idea I was very hesitant to jump on board, but after further thought and remembering the players we drafted, this could be a very well-timed idea.

Jameis, as we all know, loves to be creative, and prides himself on his ability to read defenses. That may be the hardest thing about the option play, as you need to be able to make split-second decisions under ridiculous pressure. With the Buccaneers drafting Ronald Jones and revamping this offensive line, the hope is that a threatening run game can develop a threatening passing game as well.

With the offensive weapons the Buccaneers have on their roster, this offensive scheme could be a blessing in disguise really. If the offensive line and the backfield can work as one, with the right parts moving at the right time, the playmakers on the field will have their opportunities to succeed, something that seemed harder and harder to find last year.

The right split-second decisions made by the quarterback and the proper execution of blocking by the offensive line can bring this team back to a run first offense if they choose to, and by doing so will not only make the option successful, it should definitely improve the passing game as well.
