Chris Godwin: Earning His Stripes

Without a doubt, one of the hottest topics about the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has been the emergence of second-year Wide Receiver Chris Godwin. The 22-year old, flourished late in the season last year when he was given opportunities due to DeSean Jackson missing time because of an injury. In his Rookie season, he recorded 34 receptions for 525 yards and one Touchdown, which BUMPED the Saints from having a great playoff SEED. It was a beautiful long game-winning pass from Jameis Winston. His Rookie stats could easily be a lot more impressive if he had not had to deal with such tough competition at his position, as the Bucs were set at Wide Receiver with Mike Evans and newly acquired speedster DeSean Jackson.

This year, however, it seems more and more likely for Godwin to take Jackson’s place alongside Mike Evans. Coaches have been nothing but amazed by the former Penn State product and Jackson’s struggles since he became a Buc certainly help Godwin’s case. If he has a strong preseason and continues to shine in practice, Godwin’s time will come sooner than expected. He could possibly make a huge splash in his second year in the league and might end up being a huge steal in the 2017 draft at spot 84, where Tampa Bay ended up picking him.
