Is Now The Right Time to Trade Jameis Winston?

***Opinion Editorial***

When the 2018 NFL Season started, many of the so-called experts said that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would probably start the season 0-3. This would lead the way for Jameis Winston to get his job back. But that is far from the case. Ryan Fitzpatrick is leading the NFL in passing, albeit after only two games. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 2-0 to start the season and have a very good chance of continuing the season 3-0. They face the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday.

If they win that game, the questions will begin to flow. What should the Tampa Bay Buccaneers do with Jameis Winston? Should they ride the “Fitzmagic” wave? Should Winston get his job back in week 4? Should the Bucs trade Winston? I believe that the latter is the best option.

Why should they trade Winston? Well, this is two-fold.

  1. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers would receive compensation.

If the Bucs let this play out and Ryan Fitzpatrick’s success continues, the Bucs will more than likely part ways with Jameis before the start of the new year. Looking into a trade with teams who are needing a QB (Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, Dallas Cowboys) would be the ideal situation for the Bucs to part with the former number one pick.

  1. Would solve a QB controversy.

A trade would assure fans, front office, and teammates that the Bucs are not wavering in any way. Fitz has the backing of his teammates. In fact, bringing in a player after a long suspension could throw off that camaraderie. Thus, showing faith in the current setup could strengthen an already surprising season.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ front office and coaching staff will have some decisions to make in the coming weeks. If things continue on the up and up over the next two or three weeks, I believe it’ll become moot. Jameis Winston may have seen his last game as the starting QB of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
