Fitzpatrick Named Week 10 Starter – Is Winston a Part of 2019 Plans?

Shortly after the Bucs’ loss to the Carolina Panthers, Dirk Koetter announced Ryan Fitzpatrick as the starting quarterback for week 10 against the Washington Redskins.

At halftime, the head coach was asked by a reporter whether Jameis Winston might get a shot in the second half. Even though Fitzpatrick did not play well in the first half, Koetter answered this question with a clear and decisive “NO!”

Koetter’s reaction, in addition to the early announcement of next game’s starter at quarterback, indicates that Koetter is through with Winston and possibly determined to stick with Fitzpatrick as the starter for the rest of the season.

This leads Buccaneers fans to wonder how far the former first overall pick out of Florida State is still a part of the franchise’s future plans. As for Koetter, you would assume he is convinced that Jameis’ tenure with the Bucs is over. However, this is not Koetter’s decision to make, especially since his days as a Bucs coach are most likely numbered.

Winston’s future with the Bucs does not look very bright at the moment. Whether or not he will be a part of the team next year might come down to the play of Fitzpatrick, as Winston might not get any more playing time this year unless Fitzpatrick gets hurt or does not perform well.

To put it in a nutshell, when it comes to getting his starting job back, Winston’s hands are tied. His future with the Bucs is highly dependent on Ryan Fitzpatrick’s performance. If Fitzpatrick plays well enough to avoid getting benched, Winston has most likely taken his last snap as a Buccaneer.
