Is Benching Winston a Mistake?

Last Sunday when the Bucs played against the Carolina Panthers, coach Dirk Koetter was asked at halftime if he would put Jameis Winston back in. His answer was an emphatic no. There are positives and negatives to benching Winston the rest of the year. Let’s take a look at the positives.

At 36, Fitzpatrick is a well-traveled veteran but has also had his fair share of boneheaded moments. Overall this season Fitzpatrick has started 5 games, completing 122 passes with an incredible 66.3% completion rate. He has thrown for 1,793 yards with 17 TDs and just 7 interceptions. Fitzpatrick is still very light on his feet; even at his age he’s able to take off and run for chunks of yardage when nobody is open.

Now let’s take a look at the disadvantages to benching Winston. He supposedly was the QB of our future, the best QB prospect in 10 years, some football analysts said. Koetter could choose to put him back in and mull over whether he can pull us out of this mess. I’m afraid if Winston is benched the remainder of the year his career in Tampa could be over.
