Buccaneers To Franchise Tag Smith

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will franchise tag Donovan Smith according to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times.

The much maligned left tackle will be retained and negotiations will continue for a long term extension.

Smith has had his issues with penalties and missed assignments, but his 64 career starts and relatively young age (25) was enough for Jason Licht to franchise tag him and continue negotiating a long term deal.

If both sides don’t come to a long term deal Smith will make $14 million under the franchise tag.

Smith’s potential $14 million tag, would be a big hit to Bucs team who is already limited on cap space. It could force the Bucs to get creative in order to make cap room to have some flexibility in free agency.
