*Updated to include Jason Licht’s statement

Jason Pierre Paul suffered a potential season ending neck injury in his single-car accident per Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The belief is that the specialist will recommend surgery for his fractured neck. Which will more than likely be a season-ending event for Pierre-Paul.

This puts the Buccaneers in an unusual situation with their star DE potentially going into the regular season on IR. With this in mind, the Bucs May be forced in retaining Gerald McCoy to help solidify the defensive line in Pierre-Paul’s absence.

GM Jason Licht made an official statement after news broke Tuesday saying,

“As we stated last week following the news of Jason’s auto accident, our immediate concern was for both Jason and his passenger. While Jason was treated and released in south Florida the same day of the accident, we wanted to ensure that our medical team had an opportunity to perform a thorough evaluation here in Tampa, and that process is currently ongoing.”

As it stands now, he is due to make $14.9 million in 2019. $7.5 million of which is caught up in dead cap space. It is early, but at this point it is not out of the realm of possibility that the Bucs could in fact try to clear some cap room after this serious injury.

We will update this story more as it unfolds.
