Buccaneers Find Their “Honey Badger”

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers seem to have found their “Honey Badger.” No not the one that was falsely reported to have signed as a free agent by some other websites, but their own version.

Mike Edwards as you know was drafted in the third round this year. The 5’10” 205 pounder out of the University of Kentucky has impressed the Buccaneers coaching staff thus far.

Edwards played in every game during his four years at Kentucky, including 44 starts, before graduating with a degree in family sciences. Posting over 300 tackles and 10 career interceptions while in college was enough to catch the Buccaneers eye.

So why the “Honey Badger” moniker? Edwards’ nickname in college was “Badger”, he wore No. 7, and his Instagram handle is “Badger_7.” Edwards is obviously a fan of Tyrann Mathieu.

During OTAs the rookie has excelled at well during blitz packages. He has, on more than one occasion, applied pressure on the quarterback and even batted some balls at the line of scrimmage. In coverage, he has shown the ability to read and jumps routes which has led to interceptions. This rookie seems poised to have an immediate impact on a defense that definitely needs it.

There will only ever be one “Honey Badger,” but it’s safe to say that Mike Edwards will be badgering plenty of quarterbacks and wide receivers in the league for many years!
