Hey John Lynch, Someone’s Knocking at the Door!

When David Baker, the President, and CEO of the NFL Hall of Fame knocks on your door, its a good thing. With the centennial celebration of the NFL this year the Hall of Fame got started early. Informing former Steelers HC Bill Cower during the CBS NFL Today broadcast (seen here) a few weeks back. Also informing Cowboys and Dolphins former HC Jimmy Johnson during Fox NFL Sunday that he too would be going into the hall in 2020 (seen here). As for Tampa Bay, Buccaneer fans know that legend John Lynch is already in Miami on a business trip this week. It could be a ‘two for’ for the California native.

Respect the Process

Early in the morning, this Saturday the HOF selection committee will begin deliberating who makes the cut. Sometime that afternoon the committee will decide on who makes the Hall of Fame in 2020. Those chosen will be asked to report to their hotel rooms for “the wait”. The players selected for enshrinement will get a phone call or knock on their door. They will then want to start making appointments with the sculptor who will create their bronze bust for permanent placement in Canton.

Seven Year Itch

This is the seventh time John Lynch has been a finalist for the HOF. The committee is famous for not putting two players of the same position into the hall in the same year. With most agreeing that former Pittsburgh Steelers strong safety Troy Polamalu is a first-ballot shoo-in. That would seem to make the odds for #47 a little steeper in 2020.

As general manager of the 49ers, Lynch was named the 2019 executive of the year by the Pro Football Writers Association. His competitive nature is as strong in the boardroom as it was on the field. With nine Pro Bowls between Tampa Bay and Denver, and being in both the Buccaneers Ring of Honor and the Broncos Ring of Fame is a statement. When you look at the significant role John Lynch played in the success of the Tampa 2, his relentless style of play, and what he meant to the teams he played on the numbers definitely add up to a bust in Canton.

In the next couple of days, there are so many football activities to quench the NFL fan appetite. There is all the news for the Chiefs and 49ers leading up to Sunday’s Super Bowl LIV. The final selection of the 2020 Hall of Fame inductees for enshrinement on Saturday afternoon. Saturday night is the NFL Honors. So much to look forward to.

Although there is one thing that could make Buccaneer fans ecstatic this Super Bowl weekend. A knock on Lynch’s hotel door by David Baker sometime late Saturday afternoon. That really would be a really good thing.
