Bucs Report Staff’s Buccaneers Captains Predictions

Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady exudes a form of leadership that only a small number of players ever get to experience. He is another coach on the field, demanding excellence and working to earn the respect of his teammates, regardless of his past accolades.

A player like Brady will most certainly be deemed a team captain before week one, but what of the rest of the team? Take a look at who Bucs Report predicts will wear the “C” on their chest this Fall.

The 2020 Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a stacked roster. You can make the case for up to 10 players but I think Bruce Arians sticks to two on offense, two on defense, and one on special teams.

Tom Brady and Mike Evans need no explanation, but you could make the case for Ali Marpet or Ryan Jensen as well. Defensively, it might be strange to have two players from the same position as captains, but Devin White is the quarterback of the defense and Lavonte David serves as a leader behind the scenes. Ndamukong Suh, Vita Vea, Shaquil Barrett, and Jason Pierre-Paul are all potential options as well.

Lavonte David and Mike Evans are near certain locks to be named as captains for the 2020 season. Even in his first year, Brady, the unquestioned leader of the offense, is almost certain to be named a captain as well. If the Buccaneers roll with five captains, this leaves two more spots. Assuming one goes to special teams and one to a starting player. This is where I battled with myself, keeping it even with two offensive and two defensive captains. I thought about Ali Marpet here for all he’s done being the player rep. I considered Shaquil Barrett for the production he put up last year. In the end, I went with veteran Jason Pierre-Paul. Since Pierre-Paul came to the Buccaneers he has been a consummate professional. He’s helped bring the younger players along and is a respected leader in the locker room and the league.

In a recent twitter poll, we asked you, the fans, to name who you think would be the five captains for this team. Your results for the top three were as expected with David getting the first spot, Brady claiming the second, and Evans taking the third. Shaquil Barrett made it a race with Marpet, but in the end, Marpet pulled away for the final spot. Ryan Smith won the special teams vote.
