Buccaneers Fall to Saints in Brady’s Debut

The start of the Tom Brady era ended in a dud. Brady threw a critical pick six, and the return team muffed a punt in their own territory. Here is a recap of the game, quarter by quarter.

Quarter One

The Buccaneers defense got off to a great start, only allowing one first down in the Saints first possession.

Brady then led a methodical drive down the field. A solid rushing attack and a dime to Chris Godwin put the Buccaneers on the goal line. Brady eventually caped it off with a two yard sneak for a touchdown.

The two teams traded possessions, before Jamel Dean nearly picked off Drew Brees. Defensive tackle Rakeem Nunez-Roches also goes down to injury in the same drive.

Quarter 2

The Saints lead a three minute drive to set up Alvin Kamara for touchdown on a screen.

Tom Brady threw a rare interception that sailed over the head of Mike Evans, giving the Saints good field position to take the lead. Unfortunately for the Bucs, Alvin Kamara runs up the middle for a six yard touchdown run.

Mike Evans and Marshon Lattimore get into a scuffle, which gives the Bucs a first down via 15 yard penalty.

A Brady sack leads to a field goal try, which is blocked by the Saints. Brees and the Saints lead the offense down the field, but a stop by the Buccaneers leads to only three points.

Quarter Three

The Buccaneers open the second half with the ball, but dumb penalties and a Brady pick six gives the Saints a 24-7 lead.

The Bucs drive quickly down the field, and after a pass interference and a big run by Ronald Jones, O.J. Howard catches a wide open pass for six.

The Saints get the ball to midfield, but an opportune sack by Jason Pierre-Paul forces a punt.

Another long drive by Brady and company results in a field goal by Ryan Succop, the Buccaneers bring the game to within a touchdown.

Quarter Four

Unfortunately for Tamp Bay, the Saints get a big play by Jared Cook, followed by a touchdown by Emmanuel Sanders. New Orleans pulls ahead by two touchdowns.

A face mask by Carlton Davis allows the Saints to kick off from the 50, which causes a muffed return, and a recovery by New Orleans. Will Lutz kicks a 21 yard field goal which puts the Saints up 34-17.

With roughly two minutes left in the game, Tom Brady finds Mike Evans in the back of the end zone for a touchdown. A two-point try is no good as Tom Brady sails a pass over Evans.
