Don’t Rule Him Out

After last season, many were already beginning to use the B word when discussing rookie second-round draft pick, Robert Aguayo, Bust! It was the earliest a kicker had been picked in the draft since another Florida State stud placekicker, Sebastian Janikowski was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the first round of the 2000 NFL draft.

However, the similarity between these two doesn’t end there.

In 2000, Janikowski’s rookie season, he made 68.2% of his field goal attempts. Aguayo made, 71%. Why do I bring that up? Simple, because after just his rookie campaign, people are ready to anoint Robert a bust. My definition of a bust is Ryan Leaf or JaMarcus Russell. I think it’s still too early to give up hope on Aguayo.

Obviously the team feels the same way, because instead of just parting ways with the rookie, the team brought in Nick Folk to light a fire under him, if this tactic doesn’t work, and he doesn’t show any growth this season, then perhaps those calls may be warranted, but let’s get behind him and help him develop into our Sebastian Janikowski.
