Pro Football Focus Mock Draft Review – By BritBuc

Next on our mock draft reviews is PFF with their 2nd released mock draft. Typically PFF is not very accurate with their mocks; However, they did grab my attention with a very interesting pick with…

Round 1 – Derwin James S Florida State – Mmm ok, yes the Seminole Saftey is arguably one of the best safety prospects in recent years and will be a star in the NFL. But is he the player for the Buccaneers at 7?

Blessed with stunning athletic ability a high football IQ, James is capable of playing multiple positions in the secondary. Excelling in both run stopping and pass coverage Derwin James would be a very welcome addition to the Tampa Bay defense. Or would he?

Whilst I’m not going to sit here and doubt his value, James is a luxury pick at this point. I’ll briefly gloss over the fact that the Seminole has had a serious injury to his left knee and surgery to repair the meniscus in that knee. Will James even be able to stand up to the physicality of the pro game?

That’s not even the reason I personally wouldn’t draft Derwin James with the 7th overall pick. No matter how talented the safety is, if you cannot pressure the Quarterback I don’t care who is in the secondary. You could line up an all Hall Of Fame defensive backfield, if the QB has time to throw someone will get open.

Whilst I can’t believe I’m turning down such a talented player, I just don’t think it’s the piece we need. How would fellow Bucs fans feel if James was the pick at 7?
