Should the Bucs move on from Jameis Winston?

The case can easily be made that QB Jameis Winston is the most talented QB to ever play for the Buccaneers. At just 24 years old and at 3.5 seasons he has thrown for almost 13,000 yards for 75 TD’s and 54 INT’s. Majority of those interceptions came in his first two seasons. For all intents and purposes he has seemed to be the Bucs franchise QB. Is he now though?

I’ve written and talked about before how he has and will continue to be the face of the franchise. He has the talent, the intangibles, everything you want in your dream QB… Except the ability to learn from crucial mistakes. His 2018 campaign got off on a rocky start and the course was never corrected. Franchise QB’s don’t get suspended for off the field issues. Franchise QB’s don’t throw 10 picks in 3.5 games. Franchise QB’s aren’t surrounded by continuous bad PR. They do the opposite on all those things, and those issues came to a head Sunday. Which resulted in the benching of Jameis Winston. A benching that may be indefinite.

Dont get me wrong I think Winston is a good QB. He has the potential to be a very good QB. Unfortunately all the wrong things have happened for him at he worst possible time. If I’m Koetter I’m fighting for my job. A job that can’t take any more performances like that from Winston. Because of that I’m icing him for the year. If I’m Licht I for sure can’t pay him $20.9M off the season I’ve seen from him thus far. So where does that leave Winston ultimately?

Could Winston win his starting job back? Sure. He could, even if it could end up being a bad decision if he gets injured. That said if history is any indication, Fitzmagic will turn into Fitztragic sometime along the way, and it could open up an opportunity for Winston. Now if Fitzpatrick keeps up his recent performances, Jameis Winston could of very well played his last snap as a Buc.
