Report: Bucs Interview WV QB Will Grier

It was reported today via the Pewter Report, that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had an informal interview with West Virginia QB Will Grier. Additionally he met with Bucs OC Byron Leftwich at the NFL Combine.

It is normal for teams to interview and bring in a variety of draft prospects in the off-season, and most of which can be summed up as the team doing its due diligence. Team’s have even been known to give attention to certain prospects to throw up smoke screens to muddy their draft plans.

The interview and separate meeting with the West Virginia Mountaineer is intriguing. As the Bucs could look to improve their backup QB spot behind franchise QB Jameis Winston.  Walter Football gives Grier a mid-round draft pick value, and that scouts see him as a quality backup entering the NFL.

In Grier’s last season at West Virginia he threw for 3,864 yards 37 TD’s and 8 INT’s. Despite a solid season as a senior, there wasn’t a ton of buzz coming from him after the Senior Bowl. Mostly stemming from his lack of arm strength that was exposed in Alabama last month.

With the likelihood that backup Ryan Fitzpatrick will not return for another season, it leaves the sole backup duties to the untested 6 year pro Ryan Griffin. Who has spent the entirety of his career as a backup with the New Orleans Saints and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

If the Bucs are not comfortable with the depth they have behind Winston, they could consider using a mid to late round pick on a QB prospect like Grier.
