Keep Gerald McCoy In Tampa Bay.

First off, let’s just admit right now that Gerald McCoy is still the man. The Buccaneers drafted this young man out of Oklahoma with the #3 pick in the 2010 NFL draft. A rare combination of speed and unbelievable strength, the defensive tackle known as GMAC has made six Pro Bowls, been voted first team, all-pro three times, and is a leader on the defense as well as in the community. For McCoy’s first five seasons Buccaneer fans weren’t even sure he had a voice. Gerald has always been a leader by example, not by words. Heck, he was the best thing about Hard Knocks a couple of years back, with his sense of humor, leadership, and world class smile.

Of all the things Jason Licht and the Buccaneer front office should be talking about in these last hours before draft day, one important topic should be how to keep Gerald McCoy in Tampa Bay. It’s not like we’re talking about some has-been who hasn’t pulled his weight. Gerald made the Pro Bowl as late as 2017. In 2018 he played in 14 games, recorded 6 sacks, and was one of only two people who actually looked like they knew what they were doing on defense. He was also nominated for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He’s not just pulling his weight—he is pulling quite a bit extra.

We know that the salary cap is hanging over the team like rotten grapes still on the vine. But don’t tell me Gerald McCoy shouldn’t be a Buccaneer because he doesn’t have it anymore. In fact, I’m not much of a wine drinker. I’d prefer to let those grapes stay a little longer and enjoy some sweet raisins.
