Arians: “Really good chance” of Winston returning in 2020

Following Sunday’s win over the Arizona Cardinals, Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians commented on Jameis Winston’s future with the team.

“He’s taken us down the field to win or tie the game the last two weeks in the last two minutes, that’s the maturity of a young quarterback you’re looking for. If he plays like he has the last two weeks for the rest of the season, I’d say there’s a really good chance.”

Jameis Winston is in the 5th year option of his rookie contract. He holds nearly every Buccaneer passing record but has struggled to shed his propensity to turn the ball over. This puts the Buccaneers in a tough situation. Do they franchise-tag the 25 year old quarterback next year at a cost of over 30-million per season or do they offer him an extension which would be well over 100-million? With the other option being to just cut him, the Buccaneers definitely have a big decision coming.

Sunday’s victory over the Cardinals is like a microcosm of Winston’s career. One play he makes a horrible decision and throw, thenext play he completes a pass that few quarterbacks can. He reminds me of the character Willie Beamon from the movie “Any Given Sunday.” He has the ability to make fantastic plays, but typically not till he throws up a time or two.
