Buccaneers Win in Shootout, Beat Chargers 38-31

The Los Angeles Chargers head into Raymond James Stadium to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for their first matchup in four years. In a wild shootout, Tom Brady throws five touchdowns to extend their record to 3-1. Here is a complete recap of the game.

 

First Quarter

The Buccaneers receive the opening kickoff, an elect to give Ronald Jones the first four touches of the game.

Back to back throws to Mike Evans puts Tampa Bay in the red zone. A three yard strike to Cameron Brate in the end zone puts the Buccaneers up 7-0 after a methodically five minute drive.

The Los Angeles Chargers begin their offense with a heavy dose of Austin Ekeler, and a trick play gives LA a first down. A 53 yard bomb to former practice squad player Tyron Johnson ties the game at 7-7.

Mike Evans exists the game with an ankle injury, which leaves Tom Brady with Scotty Miller as the wide receiver one.

Bruce Arians and Byron Leftwich continue to feed Ronald Jones, who has 33 yards in two drives.

Unfortunately for Tampa Bay, Tom Brady throws a pick six on an out route to the left side, and the Chargers take a 14-7 lead.

The Buccaneers go three and out, and for the Chargers to do the same. Chargers running back Austin Ekeler struggles to put pressure on an injured ankle, and is carted to the locker room.

A Bradley Pinion punt puts puts the Chargers inside the five yard line to start the second quarter.

Second Quarter

After a long and methodical drive by Los Angeles, Justin Herbert throws another touchdown pass to Tyron Johnson to extend the lead to 21-7.

A 44 yard attempt by Ryan Succup is no good, and the Chargers continue to lead 21-7.

After a few back and forth attempts on offense, Michael Badgley hits a 53 yard field goal to extend the lead to 17.

Kenjon Barner gets hit hard on an out route, and the Chargers get flagged for a personal foul.

Tom Brady throws an incomplete pass to Mike Evans, and in frustration, shoves Rayshawn Jenkins. A 15 yard penalty sets Tampa Bay back again with 55 seconds remaining.

Ndamukong Suh causes a fumble in Chargers territory, recovered by Devin White. Brady finds Mike Evans in the back of the end zone for a touchdown. The Buccaneers still trail 24-14 going into halftime.

Third Quarter

On the opening drive for the Chargers, Justin Herbert is sacked by Jordan Whitehead. A methodical drive by Brady and the offense results in a 28 yard touchdown pass to O.J. Howard to make it a three point game.

On 4th and one in Buccaneers territory, Joshua Kelly converts the play to continue another long drive by the Chargers.

Fortunately for the Buccaneers, an illegal chop block penalty puts the Chargers back 15 yards, and a 47 yard field goal is wide left.

In just two plays, Brady hits Scotty Miller twice, once for a 19 yard touchdown to take the lead 28-24 with 59 seconds left in the third.

On third and seven, Todd Bowles blitzes the house, but it never gets home, and Justin Herbert finds Jalen Guyton for a 72 yard touchdown with 13 seconds left in the quarter.

Fourth Quarter

After an offensive pass interference on Mike Evans, Brady finds him for a 48 yard gain to put the Buccaneers in the red zone.

For his fifth touchdown on the day, Tom Brady finds Ke’Shawn Vaughn to retake the lead 35-31.

A great play on third down by Sean Murphy-Bunting and Lavonte David force a punt for the Chargers.

O.J. Howard exits the game with an achilles injury halfway through the fourth quarter. Injuries are starting to pile up for the Buccaneers.

A Gronk sighting at Raymond James stadium! He comes down with a 50/50 ball to extend the drive even further. The clock continues to tick below four minutes.

A Ryan Succop field goal puts the Buccaneers up by seven with a 38-31 lead. 2:40 remains for Justin Herbert and the Chargers offense.

Carlton Davis intercepts Justin Herbert, but a holding penalty brings back Tom Brady and the offense. A huge turnover for the Buccaneers with less than three minutes remaining.

Ronald Jones gets a timely first down, and rushes for over 100 yards for the first time in his career.

Brady lines up in victory formation, to seal the win with a final score of 38-31. The Buccaneers head to Chicago to take on the Bears on Thursday Night Football.
