Week one of the 2022 season is in the books and the Buccaneers walk away putting a checkmark in the win column. In true Tampa fashion, the offense started the first few quarters slowly and sputtered at times. Ultimately, it was the defense that shined in week one setting the tone for what could be a prolific season.
The opening drive for the Dallas Cowboys looked promising, hope was in the air throughout the stadium. In 14 plays Dak Prescott marched his offense down into Buccaneers territory and set his team up to put points on the board first. The result: a field goal.
Unfortunately for Cowboys fans that would be the only time their team would be putting points on the board.
Awakening The Monster
After those first three points the defense said “no more”. In a complete defensive performance at every level and in ever facete of the game the defense toke over. The next two cowboys drives were three and outs and the fourth, an interception deep in their own territory. By the end of the first half all Dallas could muster was 74 total yards and three points. They were smothered.
Not letting up the defense pinned their ears back in the second half. Though a little more efficient Dallas only moved a total of 144 yards in the second half. Three of these drives ended on turnover of downs and two ended with a punt. The defense was rolling.
This was a game of threes. The Buccaneers defense only allowed three total points, had three players with a sack, and only allowed the Cowboys to cross the 50 yard line three times the entire game.
In the end the defense stacked up four sacks, seven tackles for loss, six pass deflections, and eight quarterback hits. Add in the interception by Antoine Winfield Jr and you have a complete game at every level of the defense.
If the defense keeps this up all season they’ll rival the 2002 Super Bowl Champion Buccaneers and one of the greatest defenses ever. They have that much talent! The next big test comes from New Orleans, who arguably have what looks like a very potent offense.
