Back in February following the hiring of offensive coordinator Liam Coen it was reported that Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield’s recommendation to hire Coen played a large part in the hiring. This wouldn’t be noteworthy if it wasn’t for the fact that at the time Mayfield was set to hit the free agent market.
Mayfield recently appeared on The “Pardon My Take” podcast where he talked about this.
“I’d be like, ‘Wait, I don’t even have a deal yet. What am I doing here?'” Mayfield stated via River Wells of Sports Illustrated. “Part of it was them trying to get input, get the right guy in there, making it more enticing no matter what the deal was that was offered. It did mean a lot during that process because that was the first time I’d been asked about anything.”
Mayfield has recently stated the Carolina Panthers and Cleveland Browns made him feel “like a piece of dirty laundry”.
“They’re still going to make their decision however they want to, they’re probably just letting me feel good about it.” Mayfield stated in regards to his thoughts of the Buccaneers hiring Coen. “Knowing that I’d worked with Liam before, I think that was a big part of it.”
The Bucs did go on to sign Baker Mayfield to a three-year deal. Turns out the team HAD already made their decision on Mayfield before the Coen hire.
Mayfield, Coen and the Bucs are set to defend the division title in 2024.
