Captain’s Table/Walk the Plank: Buccaneers vs Commanders

0

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers opened the 2024 NFL season with a 37-20 victory over the Washington Commanders. That can only mean it’s time for Carter Brantley’s “Captain’s Table/Walk the Plank” article. Enjoy!

Captain’s Table:

The Buccaneers’ star receivers

Wow, what a great game from them. They all ended up with a TD, and J-Mac just missed some big-time plays in the 1st quarter. It was a fun group to watch go to work, even if it was against a suspect Washington secondary. Isn’t that what good receivers are supposed to do, take advantage of mismatches? So give ‘em some credit for doing their thing.

Intro videos

The Bucs and the Rays have both been doing such a wonderful job of incorporating the Tampa Bay area more into their promotional videos and pictures, and that continued Sunday afternoon as they showcased the various parts of the 813/727. As a Tampa native, gotta love it.

Bucky Irving

He may not have shown it in the stat sheet, but he had a wonderful game doing the little things in pass protection and getting positive yardage, even if it wasn’t always a lot. He broke off a couple really nice runs in the 4th quarter too that sparked some “Buc-ky” chants in the crowd. I look forward to the dynamic duo of him and the next guy I’m about to mention…

Rachaad White

Did you see that play action screen pass in the 3rd quarter to set up a TD? What a beautiful play call, what a great job of blocking, and what a wonderful display of vision for Mr. White. He also had some other nice plays that contributed to a really solid 1st game for the former Arizona State man.

Christian Izien

He may not have done a whole lot, as he mostly played at the end of the 2nd half, but he stepped up and played out of position when the Bucs needed an outside corner. Is it a little silly that they don’t have more than 3? Yeah, but Izien did a serviceable job in the role. Maybe don’t depend on him for too many more snaps, though.

Walk the Plank:

Bucs QB Contain

Jayden Daniels had way too many rushing yards, and a lot of them came because the Bucs simply didn’t have any type of containment. I get that he’s a rookie, but it was getting a bit silly. Luckily it didn’t cost them too much, but they have to have known that Daniels is one of the most athletic QBs out of this past draft class. No reason for that to have been such an issue.

The Officials

Look, it’s Week one for everyone, and it was REALLY Week 1 for these poor officials. The refs seemed to have more than a few penalties picked up or overturned, and they didn’t seem to quite have the hang of the kickoff rules yet either. So, you hope they get better, but it was a bit of a rough start.
