Let me lay this out for you as simply as I possibly can. Whoever decided starters should be out there for the Buccaneers in that fourth quarter needs to stand at the goddamn podium and answer for this.
The reason the Bucs will lose Chris Godwin for remainder of the season and in all likelihood is because somebody decided stats were more important than the longevity of the team and a player’s health. In a game where you already lost Mike Evans and Tykee Smith, to tempt your team with losing another key starter isn’t just a bad decision, it’s negligence of the highest order.
If I were Chris Godwin, I wouldn’t come back to this team. I mean that seriously. He came back from an ACL tear, and was having one of the best seasons of his career, only for the staff to say they wanted him out there to make the scoreboard look better. What did we get? NOTHING! WE GOT NOTHING! WE ACTUALLY GOT WORSE THAN NOTHING!
The best part about all of this is even with Godwin’s injury, the team still trotted Baker out there. I just can’t. The team literally saw the worst case scenario and still decided to risk one more key player.
But let’s go back to Evans. Questionable with a hamstring injury, and he’s still out there. He gets targeted for a TD and drops it and goes down in pain because his hamstring is reaggravated.
Respectfully, who the hell thought he was ok to play? He didn’t seem to land on it awkwardly and he was limping after his first TD. There comes a time even if the player says he’s fine to sit his ass on the bench because the long-term health of him and the team is more important. Where are the adults to help players not hurt themselves playing heroball in a game they already lost?
Yes, I don’t care what anyone says. Not Peter Schrager, not even Todd Bowles. The game was over. The idea you could get ten points in under two minutes with no timeouts is fucking laughable. If onside kicks were so damn easy, then more teams would kick them, even if you can only attempt it when you’re losing in the fourth quarter. The game was lost. Lick your wounds and focus on Atlanta.
I can’t even talk about the game. Yeah I could analyze how the team’s defense put up as much defense as a poodle would to an armed burglar or how Baker was bad after the first drive, but I don’t want to. Just look at the box score and it’ll tell you everything you need to know about the effort on display.
Godwin’s injury was just the icing on top of the cake. Congrats Bowles and Coen, you managed to piss away a whole lot of goodwill you built up. Hope you can get it back. And I hope that Godwin makes a full recovery and comes back to the Pewter and Red. That’s all that matters right now.
