The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been dealing with injuries throughout the 2024 season. While every team deals with injuries, the Pewter Pirates saw their top two wide receivers go down in one game, Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.
While reports are that Evans (hamstring) could be out until week 13, it wasn’t as good of news for Godwin. Chris Godwin suffered a dislocated ankle late in the fourth quarter against the Ravens. After further evaluation, Godwin needed surgery and by most reports will miss the entire 2024 season.
There’s been lots of speculation as to whether Godwin or any of the starters should have been playing with the game all but out of reach. Oddly there’s been very little discussion about the legality of the tackle that injured Godwin. Until now.
“A league source tells me this morning that the tackle on Chris Godwin that resulted in his dislocated left ankle was a hip drop tackle and Roquan Smith will be fined. The fine amount is $16,833.”
I know this doesn’t change anything for Bucs fans, and won’t change the outcome of the game or help Godwin heal any faster. But, what this should change is how NFL officials are held accountable for their performance. What this should do is push the NFL to make these officials actually call the games correctly. How many missed calls will it take? What is the point of installing a new rule if it’s not enforced? So a fine for Roquan Smith isn’t enough after the fact, unless the NFL is OK with subpar officiating with no real repercussions?
