The Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost to the Atlanta Falcons 31-26 Sunday at Raymond James Stadium to fall to 4-4 on the season. That can only mean it’s time for Carter Brantley’s weekly article “Captain’s Table/Walk the Plank.”
Walk the Plank:
NFL Replay System
I mean, what the fuck? You’re telling me they don’t have a pylon cam for that call, that the replay guys are just guessing based on awful angles? Ridiculous stuff that is game-changing. The Bucs aren’t going to be able to blame the missed call for their loss, they have the defense to thank for this massive L, but it doesn’t make it any better or less inexcusable.
Buccaneers Pass Rush
Kirk Cousins had about an hour to throw pretty much on every drop back. I get the Falcons’ o-line is pretty good, but that was utter dominance. Diaby, JTS, Braswell, Kancey, Vea, they were all nonfactors most of the game.
Buccaneers Secondary
Poor Tyrek Funderburk. He’s not supposed to be out there. The Bucs cornerback room was a concern heading into this offseason, and it’s rearing its ugly head every week. Another week of a QB picking them apart, getting whatever they want. It’s bad.
Todd Bowles
If you want to say it’s a rough look for a team to be this bad defensively under a defensive-minded coach, that’s fine. I get that, while I don’t necessarily put it all on his shoulders, I understand how bad they’ve been. But the 4th down indecisions and lack of gumption or confidence in the offense is where I get a bit upset. A fake punt deep in your own territory on 4th and 3 but a field goal in that same down and distance when you’re down a TD in the 1st half? The defense is playing poorly, deal with it, and react accordingly. Field goals will not win you ball games, and they didn’t in this case. It’s not entirely on Bowles, but by golly he sure as shit didn’t help.
Captain’s Table:
Throwbacks
Hey, we all love a good throwback, and the Bucs have a great one with their creamsicle uniforms and the overall themes of Raymond James. The game might not have been what Bucs fans were looking for, but I’d be hard pressed to find someone with something negative to say about the presentation and how the Bucs looked. So that’s nice.
