Tampa Bay Buccaneers co-defensive coordinator Larry Foote spoke with the media Monday ahead of this week’s matchup with the New York Giants. Foote was asked about the recent play of All-Pro safety Antoine Winfield Jr. Foote stated Winfield Jr is going through a bit of a tackling slump.
Via Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times“You don’t need to press. Everybody done went through slumps in his league, missing tackles, but Winfield be just fine,” Foote said. “I know you guys are used to the splash play, so when ain’t there, you know, we sound alarmed, but he’s doing a lot of good stuff for us.””
It’s not like Winfield Jr’s play has sucked since returning. This is more about him missing some key tackles and assignments. But as Foote stated, Winfield Jr is still being productive for the team. He’s just not making the splash plays like he used too. So while I wouldn’t necessarily call this a slump, Winfield Jr needs to play at the All-Pro level he’s capable of if this team has playoff aspirations.
Earlier this year Winfield Jr agreed to a four-year, $84.1 million contract with the Buccaneers, making him the highest-paid defensive back in the NFL.
