There Are Three Types of Buccaneers Fans, Which One Are You?

At age 56, I’ve seen enough Buccaneers football to tell the difference between a good, bad and average football team. I believe that while we ALL want the Bucs to win, we may look at the team in different ways. That doesn’t diminish our love for the team, nor does it make us any less of a fan. The three types are outlined below.

OBJECTIVE/REALISTIC

My passion for the Bucs has never changed BUT that doesn’t mean I cannot be objective and realistic in my assessment of thr team.
Right now, they are an average team at best. We all see the deficiencies on defense. You don’t give up multiple 30 plus point games and then suddenly think they’re gonna “snap” out it. Statistics and what they’ve put on tape reveal what type of team they are. Bucs are missing key pieces on Offense and have multiple holes on Defense. Until proven otherwise, they’re average until proven otherwise.

BLIND OPTIMIST

I’ll always remember in the 80’s when the Buccaneers would be halfway through the season at 1-7 and I would think “If they win the rest of their games they’d be 9-7!” That eternal optimistic fan has been replaced with a more analytical and realistic one.
Yes, the Bucs “should” win their next three games based on the competition. However, are you expecting them to win based on what you’ve seen from them on defense or just because you “hope” they’ll figure it out?

LONG TERM THINKERS

Then, you have some fans who may secretly want them to lose so the Bucs can get a better draft pick and/or a new HC. I’m not, nor will I ever “wish” the Bucs to ever lose. But, I understand those who do.  I call these fans “long term thinkers.” They contend that the current HC is never going to get them to the promised land so losing is the best way to get him fired.
So, what kind of fan are you? Blind optimist, realistic or long term thinker?

Of all the NFL teams that I could follow, why did I choose the Tampa Bay Buccaneers? It was 1979, I was an impressionable 12-year-old living in Canada. At that time, getting any NFL coverage was tough enough but that was reserved for the elite teams like the Cowboys, Steelers etc. I watched one game at 1 PM and one game at 4 PM. That was it. No Redzone, no night games on Sunday Each Christmas my family would drive from Montreal to visit my aunt in Jacksonville. I remember seeing the Bucs playing on TV against the Falcons when I was there. I saw something that day that changed my fandom forever. There was a QB wearing number 12, in an orange jersey and he wasn’t white! As a minority myself, seeing a non-white QB was something that immediately I was drawn to. I knew that this was the team, and this was the guy who I would follow. The years between 1979 and 1997 were obviously difficult but my fandom never wavered. If anything, it made me stronger as a person. I’ve often joked that I’ve had 3 wives but only ONE football team. I was asked if I wanted to write the occasional article for Bucs Report. Talking and writing about the Bucs is a full-time hobby so of course my answer was YES. I’m 56, retired and living in Costa Rica now. I sport 4 Buc tattoos and have been fortunate to make many visits to Tampa to watch the Bucs. I’ve made countless friends and even more memories. I look forward to chatting and interacting with the many Buccaneer fans throughout the world. Go Bucs Greg D’Cruz
