The Tampa Bay Buccaneers went into New York and beat the Giants 30-7 to improve to 5-6 on the season. That can only mean it’s time for Carter Brantley’s weekly article “Captain’s Table/Walk the Plank.” Enjoy!
Captain’s Table:
Vita Vea
All the way around. Vea at fullback is a ton of fun. He pancaked the crap out of a dude on his way to a sack. Overall the defense was outstanding, limiting a bad offense to under 100 yards of total offense through the 1st half. Vea led the way. Which is why he’s one of the best interior lineman in football.
Bucky Irving
He’s Bucky. There’s not really much else to say.
Baker Mayfield’s performance
I was so impressed by Baker today, after such a horrible outing a couple weeks ago it was super encouraging to see him bounce back like this, even against the Giants.
Todd Bowles
Really been easy to shit on him recently, and rightfully so. But he clearly took the Bye week seriously and the Bucs looked prepared. Even if it was against the Giants. Plus he made some surprisingly forward-thinking decisions. The failed challenge was still a good call, even if it failed, because it was a super borderline play. And he went for it on 4th early on. Was impressed with the usually passive head coach.
Bucs’ O-line
What a job by this group, without Wirfs, against a good pass rush with Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux on the edge and Dexter Lawrence up the middle. They didn’t let Baker feel too much pressure, and whether it was a result of true performance or good scheme, the results were solid either way.
Walk the Plank:
Baker’s TD celebration
I know a lot of people were feeling it, but picking on Tommy DeVito feels mean. Like he’s the quarterback for the New York Giants, let him have his silly little celebration, he isn’t going to get to pull it out very often. Baker loves to play with an edge, with a chip on his shoulder, so fine if that’s what he needs to do, but it just seemed almost rude.
