The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are preparing for their matchup this Sunday with the Las Vegas Raiders at Raymond James Stadium. With a sudden run of injuries to their defensive secondary, the team is bringing back a familiar face, safety Kaevon Merriweather.
“The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are bringing safety Kaevon Merriweather back, signing him off Detroit’s practice squad on Tuesday. Merriweather spent all of his rookie season and the first half of the 2024 campaign on the Buccaneers’ active roster.”
Merriweather had joined the Lions’ practice squad just a few days prior, on November 21st, but didn’t appear in any games for the team.
This move marks Merriweather’s return to the Bucs, where he began his career, playing for the team during his first two seasons.
The Bucs’ decision to sign Merriweather was likely driven by their current injury woes, with up to three safeties potentially sidelined for Week 14. Merriweather’s familiarity with the Bucs’ defensive scheme and his special teams experience made him an attractive addition to the team.
The Bucs are facing a shortage at the safety position due to a string of recent injuries. Jordan Whitehead is currently on injured reserve, nursing a pectoral injury. Mike Edwards suffered an ankle injury during the team’s recent win over the Carolina Panthers. Additionally, rookie safety Tykee Smith has been sidelined for the past three games with a knee issue.
