Former Buccaneers Great Says Fans Are “Spoiled” By Team’s Recent Success

I was listening to Gerald McCoy on 95.3 WDAE this week and he mentioned that the Buccaneers have become a little spoiled by their recent success. This is his direct quote:
“The [Bucs fans] who are complaining about Coach Bowles or this team or whatever is going on, they’re spoiled, and let me tell you why they’re spoiled,” McCoy said. “When I was playing those games, we were Carolina. We’d be in a game with a team we weren’t supposed to be; we would play well and just find a way to lose.

Three days removed from the Bucs win over the Panthers and I still hear fans complaining about the way they won. Winning isn’t enough anymore.
Many are also calling for Todd Bowles to be fired. As someone who suffered through the two decades of suck, I would have been more than happy with the final outcome on Sunday.
The Buccaneer fans ARE spoiled but is that a bad thing? After the 2002 Super Bowl, the Bucs had trouble remaining consistent.  After Gruden, the Bucs went through 4 different Head Coaches, lots of bad football decisions and plenty of losing.
Fast forward to 2020 and this Super Bowl team, which was largely built through the draft, has remained relevant and is trying to win their division for a 4th straight year. Expectations by the fans have been raised and some no longer are happy with just scraping by and winning a game like they did on Sunday.
The Bucs sit at 6 dash 6 and they still can accomplish all their goals. Will winning another division title be enough for some fans? With 5 games left, we are about to see how well this team plays. Spoiled or not, I want another division title and home game.

Of all the NFL teams that I could follow, why did I choose the Tampa Bay Buccaneers? It was 1979, I was an impressionable 12-year-old living in Canada. At that time, getting any NFL coverage was tough enough but that was reserved for the elite teams like the Cowboys, Steelers etc. I watched one game at 1 PM and one game at 4 PM. That was it. No Redzone, no night games on Sunday Each Christmas my family would drive from Montreal to visit my aunt in Jacksonville. I remember seeing the Bucs playing on TV against the Falcons when I was there. I saw something that day that changed my fandom forever. There was a QB wearing number 12, in an orange jersey and he wasn’t white! As a minority myself, seeing a non-white QB was something that immediately I was drawn to. I knew that this was the team, and this was the guy who I would follow. The years between 1979 and 1997 were obviously difficult but my fandom never wavered. If anything, it made me stronger as a person. I’ve often joked that I’ve had 3 wives but only ONE football team. I was asked if I wanted to write the occasional article for Bucs Report. Talking and writing about the Bucs is a full-time hobby so of course my answer was YES. I’m 56, retired and living in Costa Rica now. I sport 4 Buc tattoos and have been fortunate to make many visits to Tampa to watch the Bucs. I’ve made countless friends and even more memories. I look forward to chatting and interacting with the many Buccaneer fans throughout the world. Go Bucs Greg D’Cruz
