Who is Jack Browning?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have yet again waived another punter. Trenton Gill hadn’t been lighting the world on fire, but before the Panthers game, he wasn’t like the worst punter I had ever seen.

However, he was pretty mediocre and after a disaster of a performance where he near single-handedly handed the Panthers a win, it wasn’t that hard a decision to waive him. I’m only shocked it didn’t happen sooner after the game. Or during the game after he did his best Tony Romo PAT impression. So, we have moved onto to Jack Browning, not to be confused with Jake Browning of course.

Now, after I heard this news, I asked as a joke whether he could properly hold FG and PAT snaps. However, someone answered me and said that he did actually hold the kicks in 2021. He held them for Matt Araiza at San Diego State funny enough. By all accounts, he was a competent holder, so hopefully that won’t be an issue again. He also handled the kickoff duties for San Diego State in 2022 and 2023, so he would likely do that for the Buccaneers. Again, hopefully he doesn’t short the kickoff.

He walked on to San Diego State and became the starting kicker and punter after Araiza left. While his average in college wasn’t amazing at 45.8, on 122 punts, he placed 50 of them inside of the twenty. He does have a booming leg even if he doesn’t necessarily show it on punts. Right now, he has the longest FG made in Mountain West history at 61 yards. He also went perfect when attempting PATs, something that Justin Tucker cannot do anymore.

At the end of the day, Browning has a great chance of becoming the punter of the future if he can show out these last few weeks. The Bucs just don’t have anyone left really who can take punting duties this year. I truly did not expect this revolving door of punters on the roster. I expected Camarda to make a bounce back after an inconsistent year and he just fell off a cliff instead. Gill was not much better and screwed up so hard the team is turning to a UDFA. If Browning can’t punt well, the Bucs will likely have to draft another punter or just get lucky with a UDFA.
