Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield’s performance has been a mixed bag for the team this season, with moments of brilliance offset by frustrating mistakes. While turnovers have been a persistent issue, Mayfield’s touchdown production has been a significant bright spot, ultimately outweighing the miscues.
During his Thursday media session, Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen addressed the team’s turnover woes, outlining the coaching staff’s strategies for mitigating the issue and helping quarterback Baker Mayfield reduce the mistakes.
“We were probably waiting for stuff to occur in that Raiders game that sometimes wasn’t happening, and then when it did happen, it caught us a few times. We were really waiting for [Cover-] Zero to happen and they weren’t doing it. I think we started seeing it a little bit when we weren’t. That’s preparation, too. That’s on us as coaches, to help put him in the best possible position to be successful, while also him understanding that he can do a better job of being on time and in rhythm with some of his decisions.”
Liam Coen’s candid response was a refreshing departure from the typical coaching refrain that players need to execute better. Instead, Coen took ownership of the issue, acknowledging that he and his fellow coaches must improve their support for Baker Mayfield. This sentiment speaks volumes about the coaching staff’s confidence in the quarterback’s abilities and their willingness to share responsibility for the team’s success.
Coen’s comments also suggest that the Buccaneers are fully invested in Baker Mayfield as their leader, refusing to waver in their commitment despite the quarterback’s inconsistent performances. This vote of confidence indicates that the team believes in Mayfield’s potential and is willing to work through the ups and downs together.
