Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield is no stranger to being underestimated. Since his collegiate days at Oklahoma, Mayfield has consistently faced doubts. Only to prove himself at every level, including in the NFL, where he’s thrived with the Buccaneers.
Mayfield’s eight-year NFL career has been marked by consistent snubs from the Pro Bowl selection process, and this year proved no exception. Mayfield was instead named an alternate, joined by teammates Mike Evans, Lavonte David, and Chase McLaughlin.
The Pro Bowl Games selection process raised eyebrows by omitting Mayfield in favor of Jared Goff, Sam Darnold, and Jayden Daniels. Although each of these quarterbacks has led their teams to impressive records, Mayfield’s individual stats surpass theirs in multiple categories.
A closer look at the numbers reveals a strong case for Mayfield’s Pro Bowl inclusion. His 107.6 QB rating surpasses Sam Darnold’s (106.4) and Jayden Daniels’ (101.2), though trailing Jared Goff’s mark. Mayfield’s 39 passing touchdowns lead all NFC quarterbacks and rank second league-wide, behind only Joe Burrow.
The Buccaneers’ wins over the Commanders and Lions give Mayfield the edge in head-to-head matchups against Jayden Daniels and Jared Goff. Mayfield’s standout performance against the Commanders saw him throw for 289 yards and four touchdowns, completing 24 of 30 passes.
While Pro Bowl snubs are inevitable due to limited spots, Mayfield’s exclusion from the starting lineup overlooks his remarkable individual season, which deserves recognition.
Mayfield’s snub may be just the extra fire he needs to start this team’s playoff push. That push starts this Sunday at 1pm at Raymond James Stadium.
