Former Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich looks to be attempting to get back into coaching.
Leftwich is in the running for the New England Patriots’ head coaching position, with an interview taking place on Tuesday, according to Mike Jones of The Athletic. This development marks a significant step in the Patriots’ search for a new head coach after parting ways with Jerod Mayo. Leftwich, who was fired by the Buccaneers in January 2023, brings valuable experience to the table, having helped the team win Super Bowl LV in 2020.

Leftwich, 44, was a highly touted quarterback, selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars as a first-round pick in the 2003 NFL draft. He spent four seasons with the Jaguars before taking his talents to various teams, including the Atlanta Falcons, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Leftwich began his coaching career with the Arizona Cardinals in 2016 as a training camp intern. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the quarterbacks coach before eventually being promoted to offensive coordinator after Mike McCoy’s departure.
Leftwich’s tenure with the Cardinals came to an end after the 2018 season, prompting him to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, his time with the Buccaneers was also short-lived, as he was let go as the team’s offensive coordinator following the 2022 season.
The Buccaneers’ 2022 offense was marked by inconsistencies, ranking 15th in total offense, 2nd in passing yards, but last in rushing (32nd) and 25th in points per game.
