Buccaneers Defense Gets Healthy At The Right Time

As the Tampa Bay Buccaneers gear up for their wildcard showdown, they’re poised to welcome back two vital defensive starters. A significant reinforcement is on the horizon for the Buccaneers’ secondary, with two key players expected to return to the lineup in time for Sunday’s matchup.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles delivered encouraging news on Friday, confirming that safety Antoine Winfield Jr. and cornerback Jamel Dean are on track to play in the upcoming wildcard game, as reported by Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. Both players fully participated in Friday’s practice and are listed as questionable. Their anticipated returns to the lineup will provide a substantial boost to the Buccaneers’ defense.

Antoine Winfield Jr.’s knee sprain, suffered a month ago, was initially expected to keep him sidelined for a significant period. This was not the All-Pro’s first injury setback of the season, as he had previously missed time due to ankle and foot sprains. Winfield’s absence was a contributing factor to the Buccaneers’ struggles in various defensive categories throughout the year. However, the team opted not to place him on injured reserve, and after sitting out the final stretch of the regular season, Winfield is poised to make his return in the playoffs.

Jamel Dean’s 2024 campaign was marked by a hamstring injury that limited him to just 12 games. The 26-year-old cornerback was subsequently placed on injured reserve, but as soon as he was eligible, he was activated. Dean managed to string together six consecutive appearances upon his return, but a knee injury forced him to sit out the Buccaneers’ regular-season finale. Given Tampa Bay’s struggles against the pass, ranking 29th in 2024, having Dean and other secondary options available will be a welcome boost for the team.

As NFC South champions, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have earned the right to host the Washington Commanders on Sunday night. The Buccaneers’ high-powered offense, which ranked top-four in the NFL in both points and yards per game this season, will be counted on to lead the charge. Meanwhile, the team’s defense will receive a significant boost with the return of Antoine Winfield Jr. and Jamel Dean, as they aim to embark on a deep postseason run.
