The Tampa Bay Buccaneers season came to an end Sunday after losing to the Washington Commanders 23-20. That can only mean it’s time for Carter Brantley’s weekly article, Captain’s Table/Walk the Plank. Enjoy!
Walk the Plank:
Choosing white flags as the giveaway
I mean, come on. I’m not saying it was the reason they lost, but it’s also not exactly NOT the reason they lost either, you feel me? Couldn’t they have chosen red, pewter, literally any other color that doesn’t represent giving up? Your fans waving a bunch of white flags to start a playoff game is, um, inconspicuous, and again, not the reason they lost, but just a bad omen.
Liam Coen
Calling a fancy jet sweep while trying to salt away a victory is getting far too fancy for your own britches. Just don’t get having Bucky Irving in your backfield and making that play call. Really confusing stuff.
Baker Mayfield’s ability to hand off a football
Sigh. Just the absolute worst time for that to happen. I have no idea what that play call was, but obviously the execution was about as poor as it could’ve been, too.
Todd Bowles’ clock management
Another week, another head coaching disasterclass in regards to clock management. This one didn’t cost the Buccaneers, as Marshon Lattimore bailed them out with an awful defensive pass interference and poor coverage, but the end of the first half was bad. These are supposed to be professional coaches. Let’s get this shit cleaned up.
The Bucs’ defense in crunch time
Another last-second loss. Seems like the story of this season. But other than that they were actually fine, only giving up 16 points is fine (the touchdown they gave up after the turnover does not count).
Baker Mayfield designed runs
Hey. I like watching Baker scramble around and make things happen. But that guy on the Commanders is the dude who can actually make plays with his legs on designed runs. Baker is very good at many things. Creating with his legs on those read options is not one of them.
Captain’s Table:
Bucky Irving
What a rookie season for him. He was outstanding again tonight, and a joy to watch run the football.
Mike Evans
Another elite game for the veteran, he has been outstanding down the stretch. Buccaneers could not have made the playoffs without him.
Calijah Kancey
He made a big time stop in a goal to go situation that was largely forgotten because of the loss, but shoutout to him, he was great.
