The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may be heading back across the pond again in 2025. This time the destination is Spain, and the opponent may be the Miami Dolphins. The Bucs may be making history soon, as the latest schedule reveal has opened up the possibility of them becoming the first NFL team to play in a country that’s never hosted an NFL game before.
The Miami Dolphins have been designated as the home team for the NFL’s inaugural game in Spain, scheduled to take place at the iconic Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, which is also the home stadium of renowned soccer club Real Madrid.
This development holds significance for the Buccaneers, as they are slated to face the Dolphins on the road in 2025, potentially setting the stage for the NFL’s first-ever regular-season game in Spain to feature the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Pewter Pirates have been pioneers in the NFL’s international games, with a history of competing abroad dating back to 2009. Their overseas endeavors have taken them to London’s Wembley Stadium, where they faced the New England Patriots (2009) and Chicago Bears (2011), as well as Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where they played the Carolina Panthers (2019). However, it was in 2022 that the Buccaneers achieved their first international victory, defeating the Seattle Seahawks 21-16 at Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany. Notably, the Buccaneers hold international marketing rights in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, further solidifying their connection to the region.
The Buccaneers may be on the cusp of making history again, as they potentially become part of the NFL’s inaugural game in a new country for the second time in four seasons. The answer will come in May when the NFL unveils its complete 2025 season schedule.
