Buccaneers Keep Their Guy Coen

Yeah so we should all be buying Trent Baalke a drink. The man might be the biggest Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan without truly revealing it. Because this would mark the second time he has allowed us to keep an OC. The first time was when Byron Leftwich asked for Baalke’s head in order to take that job in 2021.

And now Coen seems to have asked for the same thing. Or, that’s what many people are speculating at least. There are likely other factors in play. However, I don’t think you can discount that possibility when Jordan Schultz has a message from someone saying that Baalke still being employed is “f*cking insane”.

However, this is not a Jags fan blog, but a Bucs one. And this is still a testament to how good the leadership is for the Buccaneers. This was a group effort from Bowles and Licht to convince Coen to wait at least one more year before leaving. The real question is what they said. Coen is slated to become one of the highest paid OCs in the NFL, so I guess part of the conversation was Licht drawing zeroes on a check. But there are some who think that there is a succession in place for Coen to takeover for Bowles in a season or two. I get the logic for this, but I don’t think there’s a Jerod Mayo contract exactly. If there is an agreement, it’s most likely informal and more of a promise that he will get serious looks should Bowles underperform.

This is some of the best news the Bucs have gotten in a long time. Jon Ledyard on Twitter thinks Coen has the potential to be the next Sean McVay. As hyperbolic as that sounds, I don’t think he’s that far off. Coen’s offense is that good. The Bucs will be keeping almost all their pieces on offense if they can resign Chris Godwin. An offense that was still top ten in everything without him for most the season. Now Licht and Bowles can focus on free agency and getting that defense to a more acceptable level.
