I have to be honest, I wasn’t expecting to write this. I never thought there was a chance in hell the Browns would trade their franchise player.
Their GM said as much during the Senior Bowl. What I didn’t anticipate was Garrett asking out of that shit heap. That puts a new spin on things for sure. Now, it seems the Browns’ front office is committed to the strategy of sticking their heads in the sand. However, they may be forced to actually accept reality when they remember the alleged sex offender is still draining their cap. There are a lot of factors at play here, but we can simplify it. Why would the Browns trade him, why should the Bucs want him, and what can be offered.
Trading Myles Garrett doesn’t make them a better team immediately. But they need to do something to rebuild. Their team is basically falling apart at the seams. They have no QB, Nick Chubb may never be the same, their o-line is filled with a bunch of geriatrics, and they have a lot of aging players across the board as well as big contracts. Something has to give for them to even get under the cap. They would take a $36.5 dead cap hit for trading him, but still get out of the remainder of his deal. The big thing for them is getting draft picks that turn into young players they will inevitably ruin, but there’s a chance they won’t.

Now for the Bucs. Our edge rushers are mediocre at best. Maybe YaYa takes the jump that we expected for last season or maybe Braswell becomes something, but Garrett gives them an immediate jump. We haven’t had a guy with double digit sacks in a few seasons. Myles Garrett is the first player since 1982 to have four seasons of over 14 sacks. Yeah we could use that. It’s not normal for nose tackles to lead their team in sacks, so to have an edge Rusher who can take over on the line would be so nice.
The Bucs can offer the Browns the #19 pick in this year’s draft. That’s an important detail because that is most likely the best draft pick they could receive from a “contender” like Garrett wants unlike say the Bills or Commanders. Should the Browns ask for next year’s first rounder, it will likely be even later done the line (I assume the Bucs will get better with this trade). Maybe the Browns ask for a second or something like that as well or instead of. I also think there is a slight possibility they could be persuaded to accept Jamel Dean. But don’t hold your breath. The Browns probably don’t want to have an aging injury prone corner. If that aging, injury prone corner has been to some massage parlors though, maybe we can get somewhere.

I still think the Bucs don’t pull the trigger when it’s all said and done. Licht just puts too much value in his draft picks. This is not a bad thing by the way, but the reality is the Bucs have not made big trade deals with him in charge. That method led them to a SB, so I am not criticizing it. However, if Licht thinks the Bucs are a Myles Garrett away from being a SB contender, then he should throw the kitchen sink at the Browns. He is a savvy GM in knowing what’s best for the team. If he thinks it’s Garrett, then we can get this thing done.
