The Tampa Bay Buccaneers wrapped up their 2024 season with a 10-7 record, securing the NFC South title. However, their playoff run was cut short.
Despite boasting a strong core that positioned them as a legitimate NFC contender, the Buccaneers had a glaring vulnerability: their defense. Ranking 16th overall, the unit surrendered an average of 22.6 points per game.
Adding another pass rusher to pair with Yaya Diaby would bring significant value, and according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Buccaneers are well-positioned to make a move. However, bolstering the defense is a top priority for the franchise this offseason.
“The Buccaneers are in the mix in the NFC, which is why investing in a few defensive players would be prudent. The Bucs made their Super Bowl run five years ago with a dominant pass rush and multiple corners with man-to-man ability. Adding to both positions either in free agency or high in the draft will give coach Todd Bowles more flexibility in key matchups. ”
Fowler continued,
“Among key free agents to re-sign include wide receiver Chris Godwin, who seems like a Buc for life, and surprisingly good guard Ben Bredeson. Tampa Bay can save $4.5 million against the cap by releasing safety Jordan Whitehead.”
The Philadelphia Eagles’ dominant defensive line performance in the Super Bowl, which stifled even the most elite quarterback, serves as a compelling example of the impact a strong defensive front can have. This recent display may be fresh in mind, but it highlights the potential benefits of shifting the focus to defensive improvement.
The Buccaneers’ 2020 Super Bowl victory with Tom Brady serves as a prime example of the importance of a stout defense. With defensive guru Todd Bowles at the helm, Tampa is well-positioned to build on its foundation. Adding key pieces at critical positions could be the catalyst to take the defense to the next level.
While bolstering Baker Mayfield’s arsenal is a consideration, it appears that defensive reinforcements will take center stage for the Buccaneers this offseason.
The BR Rub
As Fowler states, corner and EDGE rusher needs to be the focus of this offseason. But, the linebacker corp needs some serious work as well. With stud linebacker Lavonte David’s playing status not kniwn, the team is very weak behind him. So yes, EDGE rushers and corners, but add in there linebackers as well. I’d even go as far as saying linebacker is a higher priority than corner. But that’s for Jason Licht and company to decide.
