Here We Go Again, ESPN Sees Buccaneers Taking A Step Back In 2025

As the Tampa Bay Buccaneers prepare for the 2025 season, they face a roster with several areas in need of improvement and key free agents to re-sign. Coming off a 10-win season in 2024, the team aims to build on that success, but there’s also a risk they could take a step backward instead.

Another Buccaneers Offseason, Another Bad ESPN Take

ESPN recently surveyed 13 of its analysts, seeking their insights on various NFL topics heading into the 2025 season. One question posed was which team they expected to regress next season. Notably, NFL analyst Kalyn Kahler and Eric Moody fantasy football writer both predicted the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would take a step back in 2025.

Kahler talks about how strong the NFC South is set to be:

“Carolina could be building something with Bryce Young, and Michael Penix Jr. is ready to boost the Falcons, so competition in the NFC South will take a step up this season. Will Baker Mayfield have the same success with Josh Grizzard as his third offensive coordinator in Tampa?”

Additionally, ESPN’s Moody pondered whether Baker Mayfield can replicate his success and deliver another standout season in 2025:

“The NFC South won’t be as easy for the Buccaneers in 2025 like it was in 2024. Mayfield will have another new offensive coordinator, and hitting on three straight OC hires is rare.”

Both analysts expressed concern that the Buccaneers’ new offensive coordinator, Josh Grizzard, could potentially disrupt the team’s chemistry in 2025. However, Grizzard’s goal is to provide continuity, ensuring the offense remains largely unchanged and easily adaptable for the upcoming season. While it may be ambitious to expect the Buccaneers to reclaim their status as a top-five NFL offense, Grizzard’s leadership could still yield positive results.

The BR Rub

Look, i get it, ESPN has to put out content for the sake of putting out content. Hell, I’m doing the same thing here. But C’MOM MAN, this is a pattern for the four-letter network when it comes to the Bucs. Remember when they signed Tom Brady? Do you remember what the analyst at most networks including ESPN said? To summarize, “Brady to the Bucs will be a disaster,” or ” the Bucs need more than Brady.” Remember? The Pewter Pirates went on to win the Super Bowl that year with Brady.

Then when the Buccaneers signed Baker Mayfield, it was basically the same narrative. The Bucs went on to win the division that year. Then after Mayfield and company proved the analyst wrong it was, “well every team got better in the South and the Bucs lost their OC.” The Bucs again went on to with the division.

Now here we are again, new year, same lazy takes from the mainstream outlets. We get it, Pat McAfee’s huge contract has drained your talent pool. You’re literally running on a shoe-string budget and you have to put out something right?

Here’s an idea, why not go see what the local or smaller outlets that cover this team and see what they are saying? Why is that so hard for even a “C-Team” analyst to figure this out? Not only will you not look lazy, but you might just learn something. Something you can say or write that will actually be more accurate? You know, like “analyze” the information that’s available… like an “analyst” would?

Only time will reveal if the NFC South can close the gap with the Buccaneers. General Manager Jason Licht faces a challenging task in maintaining the team’s momentum within the division. However, the Buccaneers are confident in their ability to progress, and their sights are set on taking significant strides forward in the upcoming season.
