As the Tampa Bay Buccaneers enter the offseason, they face several roster gaps that need attention. One of the front office’s top priorities is likely resolving the status of wide receiver Chris Godwin.
Despite Chris Godwin’s season-ending ankle injury, suffered in a game against the Baltimore Ravens, the Buccaneers’ offense remained potent. Under Liam Coen’s direction, the unit ranked fourth in the league in scoring, averaging 29.5 points per game.
Newly appointed offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard may potentially view Chris Godwin as expendable, but the Buccaneers franchise may still be interested in retaining the veteran wide receiver, who wears No. 14.
According to ESPN’s Eric Moody, one potential offseason move he’d like to see is Chris Godwin reuniting with his former coordinator Liam Coen, who is now with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“Wide receiver Chris Godwin signs with the Jaguars,” Via Moody. “The breakout of wide receiver Jalen McMillan and tight end Cade Otton makes Godwin expendable if the Buccaneers want to improve other areas of the team, especially given his injury history. I could see Godwin joining his former offensive coordinator, Liam Coen, and playing alongside Brian Thomas Jr.”
The Buccaneers’ continued success without Chris Godwin likely contributes to the notion that they can thrive without him. Key contributors to the team’s passing game included:
Mike Evans (1,004 yards, 11 touchdowns), Cade Otton (600 receiving yards, four touchdowns), Jalen McMillan (461 yards, eight touchdowns), Rachaad White (393 yards, six touchdowns)
Together, they helped propel Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers’ offense to a strong season.
As a result, it’s possible the Buccaneers may choose to part ways with Godwin. If they add another impactful player through free agency or the draft, it could make sense for the team to move forward without him.
While retaining Chris Godwin would be the ideal outcome, his projected market value of $22.5 million average per year (APY), according to Spotrac.com, is a significant expense. Considering the emergence of younger players with promise, it may be an opportune time for the Buccaneers to explore moving on from Godwin.
