The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are in dire need of edge rushers. While the NFL Draft offers a potential solution, the team may also explore free agency options. Interestingly, a former player is already actively campaigning for a Buccaneers reunion.
The Buccaneers’ edge rushing unit struggled in 2024, collectively tallying just 13 sacks – a number eclipsed by several individual players. Help may be on the horizon, however, as several talented edge rushers are set to hit the market. One intriguing option is Joey Bosa of the Los Angeles Chargers. While Bosa comes with a hefty price tag of $36,471,668 in 2025, the Chargers could save $25,360,000 by releasing him.
In a recent article, ESPN’s Dan Graziano examined the salary cap situations of all 32 NFL teams. Regarding the Los Angeles Chargers, Graziano reported that according to sources, the team is likely to release edge rusher Joey Bosa.
If the Chargers do decide to part ways with Bosa, who has failed to exceed 6.5 sacks since 2021, there’s already a familiar face in Tampa Bay advocating for his services.
Former Buccaneers All-Pro defensive lineman Gerald McCoy was quick to take to Twitter to recruit Bosa to come to Tampa.
“California taxes too expensive anyway. You ever been down south? I know a place with no state taxes……….. 👀”
McCoy is, naturally, referring to his home state of Florida, where he spent nine seasons (2010-2018) with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Buccaneers could greatly benefit from adding a seasoned edge rusher to their roster, and if Joey Bosa becomes a free agent, he could be the perfect fit.
The BR RubÂ
Yes, the Buccaneers desperately need EDGE rushers, but not this one. Bosa at one time looked to be heading towards a Hall of Fame type career. But as injuries stacked up his play suffered. Combine that with his age and expected price tag, there are better, more productive options out there.
Now if Bosa was willing to come to Tampa on a veteran minimum deal with playing incentives, that’s another story. But those injuries and diminishing stats are still a concern.
