Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs is an intimidating force in the NFL, boasting impressive strength that translates from the weight room to the gridiron. However, despite his formidable size, power, and athleticism, Wirfs is surprisingly overshadowed by an even more physically dominant teammate.
During a recent appearance on The Pivot podcast, Tristan Wirfs shared his firsthand experience of facing off against his formidable teammate Vita Vea.
When asked if he had ever engaged in a one-on-one battle with the 6’4″, 347-pound defensive tackle, Wirfs revealed a telling anecdote.
“They got some packages in training camp where they put him out at the end and I tell him, I said ‘Vita, don’t do this! No gloves. No tape. You see him, he’s got like his red visor. I break the huddle, see him out there. You know what it’s going to be. It’s going to be speed-to-bull. He’s going speed-to-bull. It’s over. If you set back at all, I’m in Baker’s lap. So I see him out there, go jump set him, just stop him before he gets his momentum going. Like, you cannot stop it.”

Wirfs elaborated on the unique difficulties of blocking Vita Vea, the massive defensive tackle who serves as the anchor of the Buccaneers’ stout defense.
“You see the clip of the Titans two years ago where his helmet was to the side?” Asked Wirfs. “Lined up at end, and the guy didn’t go jump set him. [Vita] just ran right through him. He doesn’t slow down. You can’t stop him.”
Tristan Wirfs and Vita Vea are undoubtedly two of the most physically imposing players in the NFL, dominating their respective positions with exceptional strength and athleticism. Fans would likely relish the opportunity to witness a practice showdown between the two giants.
However, prioritizing player safety and preserving two of their most critical assets on offense and defense, it’s highly unlikely that the Buccaneers would risk allowing such a collision to occur, even in a practice setting.
As the saying goes, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” And that couldn’t be a more accurate description of these two squaring off.
