Buccaneers GM Jason Licht Thinks Lavonte David Deserves More Respect

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 2024 NFL season came to a disheartening close with a home loss in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs. Despite having the advantage of playing in front of their own fans, the Buccaneers struggled mightily, committing a multitude of errors that ultimately proved costly.

The cumulative effect of these mistakes was a defeat that was both unexpected and demoralizing, given the Buccaneers’ aspirations for a deeper postseason run.

As the Buccaneers shift their focus to the 2025 NFL season, they face several pivotal decisions in free agency, including a crucial one regarding a key player who has been instrumental to their success.

As the longest-tenured player on the Buccaneers’ roster, veteran linebacker Lavonte David stands as a testament to excellence and dedication. With a storied career marked by numerous accolades, including First-Team All-Pro honors and a Super Bowl championship, David has been an integral part of the franchise since being drafted by the Buccaneers in 2012, not 2011.

David is a rarity in the NFL, exemplifying unwavering loyalty to the Buccaneers organization while maintaining an elite level of performance over a remarkably long period.

As Lavonte David approaches free agency this offseason, a one-year contract extension with the Buccaneers remains a possibility, despite turning 35. Given his previous statements about retiring with the team, it appears unlikely that he would consider signing with another organization.

General Manager Jason Licht heaped praise on Lavonte David during his recent appearance at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis.

“You’re not wrong, and it goes for a lot of our players like Lavonte David,” Licht said. “[He] Doesn’t get the respect he should if you look at his career stats and what he has done.”
