The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have experienced significant turnover at the offensive coordinator position over the past three seasons, with three different coordinators: Dave Canales, Liam Coen, and now Josh Grizzard.
This level of turnover can be a significant challenge, particularly for quarterback Baker Mayfield, who must now adapt to a third offensive coordinator with the Buccaneers in as many seasons, learning new systems and philosophies.

However, the frequent changes may actually be a positive indicator for head coach Todd Bowles, suggesting that the franchise is being proactive and diligent in its hiring process, continually striving for improvement.
“The biggest thing is that at least we know we’re picking the right guys,” Todd Bowles stated. “This one was a little different than the first time because our system is still in place with this one, and the coaches are the same, and Grizz [Grizzard] was at least here a year, so it shouldn’t be wholesale changes.”
Bowles continued,
“Obviously there’ll be some different things but you try to pick the right guys and it’s not the right guys depending on how smart or good they are, it’s about the right guy picking on how your team is built and how you think your guys can get the most out of what they’re coaching. So we try to do a good job picking that and make sure we got the right guy that way, and we think Grizz is that guy.”
Following the successful tenures of coordinators Dave Canales and Liam Coen, Josh Grizzard, who served as the offensive passing game coordinator under Coen last season, now faces the challenge of elevating an offense that was already among the league’s best.
While the task is daunting, head coach Todd Bowles noted a key difference: Grizzard’s familiarity with the team, having spent last season in the building. This existing knowledge of the players, coaches, and scheme will provide a measure of continuity, allowing quarterback Baker Mayfield and the offense to build upon the existing system rather than learning an entirely new one.
As a result, there is optimism that the offense will maintain its momentum in 2025, with Grizzard at the helm. The Buccaneers are confident they’ve found the right leader to sustain their success.
Only time will tell if the team’s streak of effective offensive coordinators will continue, but the early signs are promising.
