The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were recently embroiled in drama with former offensive coordinator Liam Coen. After reportedly offering Coen a historic contract that would’ve made him the league’s highest-paid coordinator, the Jacksonville Jaguars swooped in and poached him to become their new head coach.
Details surrounding the sequence of events remain unclear, but the outcome was certain: Coen joined the Jaguars, while the Bucs opted for continuity, promoting former pass game coordinator Josh Grizzard to fill the vacant offensive coordinator role.
The dust has settled, but Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht shed some light on the Liam Coen saga during an interview with Pro Football Talk at the NFL Scouting Combine this week, discussing the events that led to Coen’s departure to become the Jaguars’ head coach.
“You know, it’s in the past. Time heals. Happy for him. He is a great coach, he did tremendous things for us, he’s got a great offensive mind, a great leader. I’m excited for him and his family,” Licht said. “We learned a lot from him, he helped put a great staff together that we kept because we wanted to keep it going, we wanted stability, some continuity, and the players were very excited about that. We learned a lot from Liam and hopefully we can keep it rolling, we have confidence that we will.”

Although the Buccaneers and Liam Coen may have parted ways on less-than-ideal terms, it’s clear that both parties are eager to move forward. The franchise likely felt a temporary setback, having expected Coen to remain on board for at least another season. Nevertheless, the Bucs have seamlessly transitioned by promoting Josh Grizzard, who brings continuity and expertise to the offense, building upon the foundation established during Coen’s single season in Tampa Bay.
The Buccaneers are poised to return many of the same key offensive players from last season, but one major uncertainty looms: the future of veteran wide receiver Chris Godwin, who’s set to hit free agency after suffering his second significant career injury. With a solid foundation in place, the onus is now on the coaching staff and new offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard to make savvy decisions that will enable the Bucs to maintain their status as one of the NFL’s top offenses.
